In the spring of 2010 while planning our summer vacation we decided to venture out of our normal Wisconsin “trips up north” so we started looked into Minnesota. Neither one of us had been there before and we had no idea where to start looking. Thankfully sites like VRBO and Homeway offer many vacation home rental options. We knew we would be taking our dog Smokey with us so our choices were slightly limited with finding dog friendly accommodations.
We ended up finding a great house right on Lake Superior up in Lutsen, MN. Lutsen is located on the northeast corner of the state about 9 hours from Chicago. The only downside was that the house wasn’t available the first night we wanted it. Not being one to cut a day off of my vacation, we found a dog friendly rental for the night at nearby resort.
Caribou Highland Resort

Caribou HIghlands Resort – Lutsen, MN
Located next to the Sawtooth Mountains the resort offers a wide variety of room accommodations. Though we were just going to be there a single night we ended up renting a small 2 bedroom townhouse that had a great view of the Mountains. Known for it’s winter activities the lodge was fairly quiet for June which was great. I have to say the staff at the lodge was amazing. We arrived late at night and they allowed us to stay the whole next day with no additional charges since we couldn’t get into our home rental until late in the afternoon. The restaurant Moguls was fantastic. Great place for takeout when you can’t do a sit down when traveling with pets.
Superior Solitude – Lutsen, MN

Superior Solitude – Lutsen, MN
Our home rental was located directly on Lake Superior with beautiful views of the rocky shoreline and water. The home had two full bedrooms, a loft and a beautiful wrap around deck. The name “Superior Solitude” fits perfectly because while we were there we never saw any neighbors. For a vacation home rental the price was fairly cheap ($200 a night) and definitely fit our needs to have a place with a view to just chill. Great location as well, close to the town of Lutsen and about 25 minutes from Grand Marais.
