When mother nature decides to throw you a curve ball (see story about Ohio) you go North and head to the Dells! It was Spring and our planned trip to Hocking Hills State Park got rained out so we cut our vacation short and explored Mirror Lake State Park in the Wisconsin Dells area. It was mid-week in the off season so the campground was fairly quiet (which was great).

Mirror Lake State Park – Site #111
The campground is pretty big and sits along Mirror Lake. There were some good walking trails and a beach area.

For those folks who enjoy a good Supper Club – you can walk across a bridge and go right over to the famed Ishala Supper Club. Not bad for a State Park campground.

Bridge to Ishnala Supper Club – Mirror Lake State Park
Mirror Lake State Park is located not far from a number of other State Park/Natural Areas so it was a good place for home base allow us for daily excursions.
One day I spent the morning exploring Pewit’s Nest State Natural Area which if you blink you’ll miss the turn in for the small parking lot. Another day we put the dogs in the car and explored the surrounding area of Devils Lake State Park. Aside from the main park, there are a number of smaller nature areas (Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area) that offer some great hiking trails.
Truth be told, when we travel with the dogs I do a lot of exploring on my own. I love my pups but they are not the best with other dogs and did not grow up on the hiking trails. Additionally, there are a lot trails that don’t allow dogs. So when we explore as a family, we are limited to a lot of driving with me jumping out taking pics (or taking smaller, quick hikes while Jim hangs back with the kids).

When the sign said no dogs allowed.
