Located on the west side of the Adirondack mountains, we choose Adirondack Gateway Campground because of its location for an overnighter as we made our way up towards the Lake Placid area. When planning our route for long distance travel we choose our overnight stops based on two criterias – (1) we try and get the halfway point between the previous and next destination and (2) the location of the campground to the highway. For our one night stops we are not too concerned about the size of the campsites (ideally we don’t like to stacked in) but for one night we aren’t that picky.
This campground is a little off the beaten path. You had to drive through some winding country roads to get to it and it’s very unassuming when you arrive. The campground is actually down a road after the main house so when you first pull up your not sure if you are at the right place.
Our site was on grass backing up to a farm. It was mid-week so very few campers around (which I prefer). The hosts were very nice and told us about a hiking trail on the other side of the campground. Once we got everything set up and walked the dogs, I went out to explore.
I love it when we find overnight campgrounds that have hidden surprises to explore. Adirondack Gateway Campground did not disappoint. There was a great little hiking trail to explore (or get lost in – which at one point I wondered if I would ever find my way out).

End of the trail – Adirondack Gateway Campground
As I made my way out of trail I was greeted the beautiful site of the sun going behind the clouds giving off large sun rays. I like to call these hallelujah clouds.

On the other side of the field – what I didn’t notice when we drove in to the campground was a stunning view of the valley and the Adirondack Mountains in the distance.

Making my way back to the campsite, backing up to a field paid off. The glow from the sun as it went down on the field was breathtaking. This was right night to our campsite.
