The Upper Peninsula of Michigan (UP for short) is a beautiful area of Michigan. Because of it’s proximity to Wisconsin, I’ve visited there a number of times but have only stayed there as destination twice. Once, a few years back with Jim and the dogs and more recently this past summer as a weekend getaway with two of my cousins. Ironically, when looking for places to stay for both journeys, we first looked into Wisconsin but ended up renting two great places in the UP. I’m finding there is a great deal to explore up there.
Sunrise Beach – Munising, MI
The house is located a few miles west of the town of Munising, MI and has a beautiful location right on the Lake Superior shore. Unlike our Lake Superior home rental in Minnesota, this house has wonderful sandy shoreline – great for walking the dogs along the water. Though the home had a quaint screened in porch, it would have been great if it had a deck. Overall a nice quiet place to stay.Photos – UP Michigan & Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Lake Gogebic -Marenisco, MI
After an extensive search on VRBO and Homeaway for a girls weekend getaway in Wisconsin I ended up finding a beautiful house on Lake Gogebic in the UP. Our home rental criteria was fairly basic, we we wanted to rent a home on the water, with a nice deck and beautiful view. What makes things challenging is that a lot of the home rentals in summer (specifically in northern Wisconsin) only rent for the week. So we found this great home located on the largest natural lake the UP that had an amazing deck overlooking the lake. The house was fairly modern, next to neighbors but you never saw them. The location is a little remote. About 20 minutes from the township of Marenisco and about 45 from the larger town of Watersmeet. Also, the cell phone service was very spotty at the house.
If you are looking for a quiet getaway at a good price and just want to spend a few days hanging out – this place will definitely do. Additionally the house is about 40 minutes away from Porcupine Mountains State Park.Photos – Porcupine Mountains State Park & Lake Gogebic
